Our ideal at Kayne Eras School is to help our students learn how to learn and then be able to make a successful transition back into a less restrictive environment – in most cases, the public school system. Students who are succeeding at Kayne Eras may begin dual enrollment through part-time attendance at a public school. If they can maintain at least a B average and their behavior is consistent and positive for at least two semesters, they gradually transition back to full-time attendance at the public school. Students succeed through small class size (classes have a student/teacher ratio of 5:1) and individualized education.
Kayne Eras’ credentialed teachers and certified educational therapists:
- Assess each student’s level of learning
- Determine the most effective teaching/learning approach
- Design a program that starts where the student feels successful and builds from that critical point
- Continue to evaluate through instruction
- Facilitate communication between the student, the family, the school and other involved professionals
Diagnostic screening provides a broad range of information for evaluating existing learning problems and is crucial in the design of each student’s educational therapeutic plan. Students whose testing reveals specific learning differences receive individualized educational therapy twice weekly, whereas students whose testing reveals serious emotional problems receive psychotherapy. All students at Kayne Eras receive counseling as appropriate. Kayne Eras’ screening goals are twofold:
- to be a diagnostic force by attempting to discover learning disabilities early.
- to be a preventive force by providing interventions to improve the child’s ability to learn.
Educational Therapeutic Plan — Once testing is complete, an educational therapeutic plan is drawn up for each student, focusing on his or her specific needs. Educational therapeutic plans emphasize case management and identify environmental issues that affect a student’s success. Plan recommendations are realized through coordination with family members, public schools, teachers, principals, and other outside agencies. We provide parent training and encourage them to work with their children on specific exercises.
In addition, we offer:
- Therapeutic arts and enrichment activities that help our youngsters develop self-esteem, physical coordination, social skills, self-expression, a sense of exploration and a sense of teamwork.
- Individualized Educational Therapy and Support — an intervention to develop alternative strategies for addressing learning problems for those who are unable to learn by traditional methods.
- Weekly group and individual counseling.
- Adaptive courses that make physical education accessible to students with a variety of physical limitations. Adaptive PE provides an outlet for excess physical and emotional energy, helping students demonstrate more self-discipline in the classroom.
